Most of us think of wellness in terms of illness; we assume that the absence of illness indicates wellness. There are actually many degrees of wellness, just as there are many degrees of illness. The Illness/Wellness continuum (below) illustrates the relationship of the treatment paradigm to the wellness paradigm.

Moving from the centre to the left shows a progressively worsening state of health. Moving to the right of centre indicates increasing levels of health and well-being. The treatment paradigm (drugs, herbs, surgery, psychotherapy, acupuncture, etc) can take you to the neutral point, where disease symptoms are alleviated. The wellness paradigm, which can be used at any point on the continuum, helps you move toward higher levels of wellness. The wellness paradigm directs you beyond neutral and encourages you to move as far to the right as possible. It is not meant to replace the treatment paradigm (left side of the continuum), but to work in harmony with it. If you are ill, then treatment is important, but don't stop at the neutral point. Use the wellness paradigm to move toward high – level wellness.
Even though people often lack physical symptoms, they may still be bored, depressed, tense, anxious, or simply unhappy with their lives. Such emotional states often set the stage for physical and mental disease. Even cancer can be brought on by excessive stress that weakens the immune system. Negative emotional states can also lead to abuse of the body through smoking, overdrinking alcohol, and overeating – attempts to substitute for other more basic human needs such as an acknowledgement and respect, a stimulating and supportive environment, and a sense of purpose and meaning.
Wellness is not a static state. High – level wellness involves giving good care to your physical self, using your mind constructively, expressing your emotions effectively, being creatively involved with those around you, and being concerned about your physical, psychological, and spiritual environments. In fact, it's not so much where you are on the continuum, but which direction you're facing. High – level wellness does not preclude periods of illness and weakness, nor does it attempt to deny that death is a natural part of life.
What is Wellness?
A fundamental step in helping you achieve your health and wellness goals is to assess your current level of ‘wellness’ using a holistic and comprehensive ‘Wellness Assessment Framework’ covering twelve interconnected aspects that contribute to your overall health and vitality.
After completing the self-assessment, the results are plotted onto your ‘Wheel of Wellness’, which provides a clear representation of how well you balance these twelve areas of your life – and which need attention. This then provides the impetus to achieve optimal wellness by focusing on those areas of greatest concern.

Your 'Wellness One-to-One' Program
Working together we will develop a ‘Wellness One-to-One’ Program, suited to your personal preferences and needs, to help you achieve your health and wellness goals. The program can include face-to-face (or Skype) consultations, phone calls and regular emails.
An advantage of beHEALTHi Wellness Coaching is that it enables more in depth issues and barriers to success to be resolved through our integrated coaching and therapy approach as and when required.
The twelve aspects or segments of the Wellness Wheel correspond to the twelve arrows in the Wellness Energy System, which graphically
represent the same twelve different kinds of energy.
Think of yourself as the person in the centre. You receive energy,
then channel it through your body, mind, and being, converting it into other forms of energy before returning it to the environment
Now think of your body as a pipeline or conduit of energy. The presence of disease is a message that some form of
energy is not flowing smoothly in your life – you're likely blocking, over using, or ignoring one or another forms of energy in some
way. Wellness results from the balanced flow of these energies through you.
The three major ways by which we receive
energy from the environment are: breathing oxygen, sensing stimuli in your environment, and eating food which is oxidised by cells
and used to build and repair body tissues. You convert some of the energy you take in to maintain the channel – your body – by generating
heat and nerve impulses, replenishing and distributing blood, nutrients, and hormones and by repairing tissues.
The remaining arrows in the Wellness Energy System represent the output of energy to the environment. Self – responsibility
and love manifests as the attitude with which you approach your life, enhancing your level of wellness. Moving means the movement
of your body through space (by exercising, for example), as well as the movement of your internal organs for blood circulation, digestion,
reproduction, and so on. Energy also flows through feeling and expressing emotions; thinking, dreaming, and using intuition; and playing
and working, which are how you spend most of your waking hours. Communicating, sex, and finding meaning are complex forms of energy
that encompass the whole spectrum of life energies. You at last come full circle with transcending, the energy that reconnects us
with all that is.
